Jonathan Field
I have had many happy hours mentoring interpreters in the workplace and now eight years of experience doing tutorials with students. I specifically enjoy those moments when the student and I work out how to change one little thing which improves the whole interpreting process. I also love it when we really get to the meaning of what someone is saying rather than just signing the words because it just makes more sense.
It’s always so satisfying to see an interpreter grow in confidence because he or she knows a better job can be done in the future. It’s also gratifying because I know Deaf people will directly benefit from the increase in clarity or accuracy of future interpretations.
I strongly believe that Deaf people should have excellent interpreters and that has driven us all to set up and run this course. I believe that with the right training and support, interpreting students can learn to be excellent without a painful and emotionally scarring training experience.
I would even say that interpreter training can be fun for all involved.
